Computerbank Queensland is a volunteer organisation relying on individuals who want to make a difference. Some of our volunteers have specialist training, others pick it up as they go along.
Most of our volunteers refurbish computers, install software and build networks in our Linux laboratory at Coorparoo. Others assist with management, fundraising, donations, administration and logistics.
Our Linux laboratory is comprised of networked Linux workstations, an MS Windows desktop, a laser printer and two Linux servers, one of which is a file server and the other a router and firewall. The laboratory is used by volunteers to learn and practice various levels of computing expertise from complete novice to expert. Volunteers can use the lab for their own experiments or projects as well as special projects for Computerbank clients. The laboratory is open on selected Saturdays between 11am to 4 pm.
We teach volunteers to refurbish donated equipment and install an Open Source Linux distribution. This usually contains from 1 to 3 Gigabytes of free software, including office, internet, image, multimedia, games and education applications (many of these are compatible with Microsoft, Apple and Unix). Volunteers learn: desktop Linux for applications and web browsing; end-user Linux system administration; networking including networking to MS Windows; and how to set up and administer firewalls, routers and internet proxies.
Computerbank welcomes all volunteers no matter what their background or training. Everyone has something to offer, so please email us with your telephone number and area of interest and we will contact you as soon as possible.
